Methuen Public Schools is facing a quiet but serious crisis. Enrollment is declining, and for a district already under financial strain, that decline threatens to trigger long-term consequences that will be difficult to reverse if left unaddressed.

Earlier today, Methuen Public Schools staff and families received a brief but consequential announcement: This morning, Dr. Brandi Kwong informed School Committee leadership that she will be taking a medical leave of absence through the end of the current school year. Effective December 15, 2025, Dr. Lisa Golobski Twomey will assume the role of Acting Superintendent. This new CD policy will function alongside Methuen’s existing graduation requirements, which specify the courses and credits students must earn—such as four years of English, four years of math, and other core classes—to graduate from Methuen High School.
